The program is directed by Dr. Thomas Krivak, Division Director for Gynecologic Oncology, and Dr. Eirwen Miller. One fellow will be accepted per year, although class size is anticipated to grow as our program becomes further established with Allegheny Health Network and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Candidates are required to have graduated from an ACGME-accredited obstetrics and gynecology residency, to be board eligible or board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and to be eligible for an unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license. Remote interviews will be arranged for qualified candidates.

Clinical training

Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium (WPH) Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program is a three-year program certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate medical Education. Continuing the mission
established by Highmark Health in conjunction with Allegheny Health Network,
the program aims to facilitate gynecologic oncology education in a high-volume
interdisciplinary tertiary-care hospital, foster diversity, provide safe and
effective patient care, and promote research. Through direct oversight by our faculty in both clinical and didactic curriculum, the program will mentor fellows regarding diagnostic evaluation of gynecologic malignancies, surgical management of gynecologic malignancy, chemotherapeutics and targeted therapy, radiation physics, cancer biology, gynecologic pathology, onco-fertility,
peri-operative care, critical care management, clinical trial enrollment,
research methodologies, palliative care, and other treatment relevant to
gynecologic oncology.  The fellowship serves as a vital role to grow and innovate the division of Gynecologic Oncology within Allegheny Health Network's Women's and Cancer Institutes for the Greater Pittsburgh Area.

Fellows will complete 24 months of clinical rotations at West Penn Hospital, the flagship site of women’s and cancer care within Allegheny Health Network.  Though a number of member community hospitals serve as peripheral sites of gynecologic oncology care at AHN, fellow education will occur exclusively at West Penn Hospital. Fellows will predominantly cover the gynecologic oncology service with 1 month dedicated rotations in radiation oncology and surgical oncology. Clinical time will span inpatient (surgical and floor) and outpatient settings with rotating gynecologic oncology faculty and consideration for exposure to inpatient and outpatient palliative care services.

The gynecologic oncology division performs a high volume of surgical procedures annually including but not limited to >750 simple hysterectomies (MIS, open), >75 radical hysterectomies, >150 debulking surgeries, > 40 radical vulvectomies, and > 70 bowel resections. The faculty is actively involved in administration of chemotherapy and other targeted therapies as well as phase Ib-III clinical trials. The aim of these clinical rotations is to educate fellows in core gynecologic oncology and allied practice areas.Fellows will complete 12 months of dedicated research in their second fellowship year. Research mentors and project development will be formulated in conjunction with gynecologic oncology and surgical oncology faculty.

Under faculty mentorship, fellows will be directly involved in resident education including surgical maturation, patient care management, and resident didactic curriculum. It is the expectation that upon completion of the fellowship program, fellows are competent clinical educators.
