Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy causes the walls of the heart to abnormally thicken over time, making it difficult for the heart to do its job. High blood pressure or aging are sometimes to blame, but HCM is inherited in most cases.
HCM can be diagnosed at any age, though symptoms usually develop by middle age. Some people with HCM may not notice any indications, while others can experience symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, fatigue, and more.
Pietro Bajona, MD, PhD - Director of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program
Most people with HCM have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. This happens when the wall between the two bottom chambers of the heart thickens, and the walls of the pumping chambers become stiff. As a result, blood flow has a tougher time exiting the heart.
With nonobstructive HCM, blood leaves the heart normally, but the heart’s main pumping chamber is very stiff.

Experts at the AHN Cardiovascular Institute are highly experienced at diagnosing and treating all types of cardiomyopathy, including HCM . Our specialists can conduct noninvasive scans to determine the presence and extent of the condition. And, based on each patient’s unique needs, use medication for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy treatment or — in some cases — surgical interventions to provide relief.
