About the program

The Allegheny Health Network Division of Adult Reconstruction performs approximately 2000 primary arthroplasties and 300 revision arthroplasties per year. The program has grown rapidly from a single surgeon mentorship to a three fellow program with a diverse faculty including 8 fellowship trained joint surgeons and two fellowship trained trauma surgeons. Fellows average 3-4 days in the operating room and 1 day in clinic per week. Fellows will routinely be involved in 400-600 cases.

The fellowship emphasizes robotic assistance in total joint replacement, including 4 Mako SmartRobotics™ Systems at 3 hospitals. There is an emphasis on Direct Anterior approach with 5 surgeons performing primarily anterior approach and 3 surgeons performing primarily posterior approach. All surgeons perform outpatient arthroplasty.

Revisions will be completed through a variety of approaches. Fellows will graduate confident and comfortable with unicompartmental arthroplasties including lateral unis and PFJs.

Fellows will have teaching opportunities with a residency program consisting of 25 MD residents and 12 DO residents. Conferences include didactic resident conference, as well as a revision case based fellows conference.

While the cases will be primarily in the urban academic setting, multiple private practice community surgeons are involved in fellow education.

Research opportunities are available and encouraged.
