About the program

Allegheny Health Network offers a comprehensive 5 year Orthopaedic Surgery residency program.  In 2018, we expanded our program from 4 residents per incoming class to 5 due to the quality and expertise of available training and the volume of operative cases. Throughout the course of the program, each resident has the opportunity to gain tremendous clinical experience, in both the surgical and ambulatory clinic setting. With an expanding surgical faculty of over 40 sub-specialized physicians, our residents typically complete anywhere from 2000 to 2500 cases during the residency. Training occurs primarily at Allegheny General Hospital, an academic quaternary hospital and level 1 trauma center serving a large metropolitan population. Rotations also occur at our affiliated regional community hospital and modern outpatient surgery centers. All orthopaedic sub-specialties are represented, providing residents with ample exposure to all facets of orthopaedics.

In addition to gaining operative experience, the residents have dedicated time to attend scheduled didactic sessions throughout the week. All core topics within Orthopaedic Surgery sub-specialties are presented, with each service contributing on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule in order to expand the residents’ knowledge base. First and second year residents have additional dedicated curriculum with weekly protected time for didactic and surgical exercises. Weekly Grand Rounds provide opportunities to learn novel surgical techniques, participate in congenial debate over treatment strategies, and attend guest lectures from visiting orthopaedic surgeons. Anatomic and surgical technique labs take place in our new Center for Surgical Arts, one of the most advanced teaching facilities in the country. The 21 training stations are equipped with video monitoring and access to dedicated O-arm and robotic technology.

The development of residents into knowledgeable, well-trained, ethical Orthopaedic Surgeons is the priority of the Allegheny Health Network Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program.
