Immigrant and Refugee Health

There are more immigrants and refugees living in towns across Pennsylvania than ever before. Through the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Center for Inclusion Health, we are working to meet the needs of these diverse communities.

We train our physicians and front-desk staff on cultural issues and traditions that could affect your care. We also are making sure language translation and interpretation services are at every hospital and physician office within AHN’s network.

What is our immigrant health program?

We work to give outstanding health care to immigrants, refugees, and people who don’t speak English. Our Immigrant Health program focuses on:

• Training staff: We use cultural training tools to make sure our care teams can understand the needs of people from different cultures.
• Language support tools: We are working to make sure language, interpretation, and translation tools are at every hospital and physician office across our network. We tell our teams how to access these tools so all patients can make smart decisions about their care.
• Improving women’s health services: We are dedicated to improving the care of immigrant and refugee women. One way is by offering expectant immigrant mothers doula services. The doulas are community health workers who are immigrants themselves. They help advocate and provide support to women during and after pregnancy.
• Removing barriers to care for immigrants and refugees: We work closely with county and community organizations that serve immigrants and refugees. These relationships help us find — and fix — the reasons immigrants, refugees, and their families don’t always get the health care they need.
