Allegheny Health Network welcomes patient visitation.

Family and visitors are an important part of the healing process and are welcome at AHN.

  • Two visitors per patient are welcome between the hours of 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
  • All visitors must check in with the security desk and show valid ID.
  • Please note that all adults visiting patients under the age of 18 will undergo a background check in compliance with Megan's law.
  • Visitors under age 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult (exceptions for minors who are parents, emancipated, unusual circumstances)
  • Exceptions to these visitation guidelines require hospital leader approval, either at the unit level (Charge RN or Unit manager) or the manager of hospital operations (MHO) on duty.
  • Maximum number of visitors and visitation hours may change at the discretion of the care team. Common reasons for changes in visitation guidelines:
    • Patient privacy in double occupancy rooms or facility limitations
    • Clinical care or clinical changes
    • Visitor or patient code of conduct concerns
    • End of life/compassionate care situations
  • Please read our Patient Rights and Responsibilities.

Support person 24/7

Any patient with intellectual, development or cognitive disabilities, communication barriers or behavioral issues who needs an advocate or communicator to assist with the delivery of their care is entitled to have access to a support person 24/7 to provide this assistance.

Labor and delivery

  • AHN hospitals prioritize nurturing support to pregnant individuals throughout the labor experience.
  • Two support persons are welcome 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A doula or midwife is welcome beyond the two-person limit.
  • If a C-section is scheduled or necessary, then one support person and the doula or midwife are permitted in the operating room as medically reasonable (if it’s medically necessary to limit the number of support people, our care team will explain why.)

Mom/Baby units (postpartum)

  • Visitation hours are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
  • Two visitors are welcome at one time. Siblings of baby are welcome beyond the two-person limit. Children must be always accompanied by an adult (the mother cannot be the adult).
  • A primary support person is welcome to stay overnight.

Pediatric Units (patient under the age of 18 years)

  • Two support persons are welcome 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Visitation hours are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Siblings of the patient are welcome beyond the two-person limit. Visitors under age 18 must be always accompanied by an adult.

Neonatal intensive care units (NICU)

One set of parents, or guardians, can visit with a patient in a NICU. Limited visitation for siblings (under age 18 must be always accompanied by an adult) at the discretion of the care team.

We cannot allow children under age 12 years in the NICU at this time due to the vulnerability of our NICU babies.

Emergency departments

Two visitors are welcome to wait in a designated area. Patient room visitation may be more limited because of facility resources and patient treatments. More information will be made available upon arrival.

Behavioral Health units

Please check with the unit for visitation details as they may vary by location and unit activities.

Surgery, outpatient diagnostic, and ambulatory services

Two visitors are welcome to wait in a designated area.

Outpatient medical appointment

If you have an appointment with an AHN doctor at an office or outpatient facility, you are welcome to bring two support persons with you.

We're happy to announce that our hospital cafeterias have reopened to serve visitors.

  • Smoking is not allowed on AHN campuses.
  • Please refer to our Visitor Code of Conduct.
