The resident has numerous teaching opportunities. There is a large amount of peer-to-peer learning during the 36-month program. Senior residents are intimately involved in educating the junior residents. This fosters teamwork and camaraderie.
Residents are also involved in teaching the medical students and externs. There are always three to five externs visiting with us each month.
We also serve as a site for a core rotation for the Des Moines University, College of Podiatric Medicine and Western University
Additionally, residents from our organization's other programs rotate through our service, including family practice, emergency medicine, and general surgery.
The Program has a state-of-the-art cadaver lab to provide a facility where residents can enhance their knowledge regarding surgical anatomy and improve their surgical skills. The lab features:
Residents use the lab twice a month with attending surgeons and at various times with peers.
A large number of our recent graduates have chosen to pursue fellowship training. 40% of our residents have secured a fellowship.
