Brain injury rehabilitation FAQs

Understanding brain injury rehabilitation can feel complex, but at its core, it's about helping individuals regain lost abilities and adapt to new ways of functioning. Here’s a quick overview of how rehabilitation can help:

What is rehabilitation for brain injury?

Rehabilitation for brain injury is a specialized and comprehensive medical program designed to maximize recovery and independence for individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). It focuses on addressing the wide range of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges that can arise after a brain injury. The goal is to help patients regain lost functions, learn new strategies, and adapt to any lasting changes, ultimately enabling them to return to their highest possible level of function and quality of life. The rehabilitation process often includes different phases:

  • Inpatient rehabilitation: This is a more intensive, hospital-based program where patients receive several hours of therapy per day, typically staying overnight in a specialized unit. Inpatient rehab is ideal for individuals who require 24-hour nursing care, close medical supervision, and a highly structured, multidisciplinary approach to recovery. At AHN, our inpatient unit provides this high level of care for even severe brain injuries.
  • Outpatient rehabilitation: Following inpatient care or for those with less severe injuries, outpatient rehab allows patients to live at home while attending scheduled therapy sessions. This phase focuses on continued progress, refinement of skills, and reintegration into community life, often involving a more flexible schedule while still receiving expert therapeutic intervention.

What does brain injury rehabilitation involve?

Brain injury rehabilitation at AHN involves a carefully coordinated and personalized journey, guiding patients from the initial acute phase through to long-term recovery and community reintegration. It's a progressive process, tailored to each individual's unique needs and goals. While each person’s rehabilitation and recovery looks different, there are some common steps that happen in every patient’s plan. Typically, a patient who requires traumatic brain injury rehabilitation will experience:

  1. Hospitalization: This is the initial phase immediately following the injury, where medical teams focus on stabilizing the patient’s condition and addressing any life-threatening issues in an ICU or acute care setting.
  2. Inpatient rehabilitation: Once medically stable, patients transition to a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation unit, like ours at AHN. Here, they receive intensive, daily therapy from a multidisciplinary team (physiatrists, PTs, OTs, SLPs, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, etc.). This phase focuses on regaining foundational skills in a structured, supportive environment.
  3. Discharge planning: Even during inpatient rehab, our social workers and case managers work closely with the patient and family to plan for a safe and effective transition home. This includes arranging necessary home modifications, adaptive equipment, and outlining next steps for continued care.
  4. Outpatient therapy: Upon discharge, many patients continue their recovery with outpatient therapy sessions. This allows for ongoing skill refinement, practice in real-world settings, and addressing specific challenges that may emerge as they reintegrate into daily life.
  5. Home exercises and strategies: Patients are equipped with personalized home exercise programs and cognitive strategies to practice independently, empowering them to continue their progress between therapy sessions and foster long-term self-management.
  6. Caregiver training: We provide comprehensive training and education for family members and caregivers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to support the patient’s ongoing recovery, manage daily needs, and navigate potential challenges effectively.
  7. Follow-up care: Regular follow-up appointments with rehabilitation physicians and specialists are crucial to monitor progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and ensure continued access to support and resources.
