Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is a non-profit, ten-hospital academic medical system with locations throughout Western Pennsylvania and Western New York. Graduate Medical Education at AHN encompasses more than 500 trainees across 46 specialty and subspecialty programs seated in four AHN teaching hospitals; we are the sixth-largest GME organization in Pennsylvania and among the largest 15% in the country. Allegheny Health Network (AHN) received approval by the ACGME for the Independent Interventional Radiology (IR) residency in 2018. The Independent
IR program offers 1 or 2 years of dedicated IR training following completion of
a Diagnostic Radiology (DR) residency. DR residents who successfully complete Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) may enter the
Independent IR Residency in the second year of the program. After completing
the Independent IR Residency, graduates will qualify to obtain a dual IR-DR
certificate form the American Board of radiology.
The AHN Hospital Consortium offers one independent IR trainee position per year. The DR residency offers an ESIR option. The independent IR trainee will be exposed to a broad range of interventional radiology procedures and non-procedural clinical training that will provide a solid foundation for either an academic or private practice.
The Vascular and Interventional Radiology faculty includes eight board-certified physicians and 5 physician extenders covering 3 area hospitals. The majority of the IR residents’ clinical time is spent at Allegheny General Hospital, a quaternary medical center on the Pittsburgh’s North Side.
The independent IR resident has the opportunity to enhance their teaching skills through access to AHN Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program electives including electives in Neurointerventional radiology at Allegheny General Hospital and Pediatric Interventional radiology at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
