Inpatient rehabilitation unit

We provide around-the-clock comprehensive care in our specialized 17-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit (IRU) for patients after a complex illness, stroke, or surgery. We also provide rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord and orthopaedic injuries.

A physiatrist (a physician with advanced training in physical medicine and rehabilitation) leads your team of caregivers. We develop a personalized rehab plan that considers your unique needs and health goals.

Our inpatient rehabilitation patients benefit from:

• Intensive medical oversight available around the clock
• Nursing staff specially trained in rehabilitation
• Intensive physical, occupational, and/or speech-language therapy (at least 3 hours per day, 5 days per week)
• Involvement of specialists including social workers, respiratory therapists, and nutritionists, among others
• Individualized care plans coordinated by the rehab physician

With easy access from Route 28N in Natrona Heights, the IRU at Allegheny Valley Hospital features:

Speech-language therapy

Our speech-language therapy team designs a customized treatment plan for you. We help you relearn skills for communicating, eating, swallowing, and cognition. If you’ve had a stroke or brain injury or you live with a neurological condition or swallowing disorder, speech-language therapy is an important part of your care.

Occupational therapy at The Hand Center

Occupational therapy helps you regain skills for the tasks of daily living. In our unique Hand Center, you’ll receive specialized care for conditions affecting the upper extremities, including hands, fingers, elbows, and arms. Lymphedema therapy

Lymphedema is swelling that typically occurs in the arms or legs. We use a variety of techniques to reduce the swelling, including wrapping with specialized bandages, providing massage, and fitting you for compression garments.

Low-vision rehabilitation clinic

If vision loss has affected your safety and independence, our clinic can help. We work with you to improve your visual skills through exercises, optical devices, and adaptive equipment.
